Asturias Activities
In these pages I outline a few possible activities which may be of interest on a visit to Asturias. There really is a huge variety of things to do ranging from white knuckle adrenalin fuelled experiences to a simple walk through the stunning countryside. Here are a few ideas, whatever you do, enjoy it!

FEVE FEVE

The FEVE narrow gauge railway is an absolute delight and the perfect way to experience the beauty and diversity of the Asturias coast and countryside without the stress of driving. It is also possibly one of the best value trips you can make, though in all probability not one of the fastest. Oviedo to Santander, a distance of some 120 miles or so will currently cost about 23 euros return. Yes, that's about 15 pounds! It takes around 5 hours, but I cannot in all honesty think of a much better way of spending half a day, just not ideal for the daily commute. The price of a return ticket from Infiesto to Llanes is 7 euros, a nice leisurely 90 minute trip mostly either running along the coast or following the route of the River Sella as it snakes through the hills to the sea at Ribadesella. That's a return trip for a family of four from the mountains to the seaside with spectacular views and enough railway paraphernalia to keep the most enthusiastic train anorak happy for about the price of a CD.

The Asturias section of the FEVE actually forms one part of a much longer narrow gauge route which operates along the northern coast of Spain running from the border between the Basque Country and France the far western point of Spains Atlantic Coast in Galicia. This surely must be one of the most scenic railway routes anywhere in the world covering 800 kilometers of romantic country with more than 250 scheduled stops and taking at least 20 hours to complete, this is however for a 'through train' a 'local train' makes more stops and takes a good bit longer, but hey, who's in a hurry?

Oddly, this Spanish treasure hardly picks up a mention in any guide books I have encountered, though the narrow gauge line crosses all of Green Spain and links all of the region's capitals: Donastia, Gernica and Bilbao in the Basque Country. Cantrabria's Santander. Gijon, Oviedo and Aviles in Asturias, ending in Galicia's Atlantic port of Ferrol close to the destination city of the Camino de Santiago or Pilgrims Way, the atmospheric city of Santiago de Compostela.

Could there be a better way than the narrow gauge railway to explore the heart of Green Spain in comfort? For the traveler who wants to be part of the experience rather than just a spectator this could be for you.
